Coaching points
– Above all, it’s important that players perform basic skills well – passing the ball out in front, turning and opening up their hips and shoulders to deliver a pass, and doing strong preliminary movements.
– Players should remain active and move within their third the entire time, not just when the ball reaches their third.
– Try to avoid players driving into the same space for the same ball. Look for players to read off each other, clear out if they don’t receive a pass, and generally keep the court ‘balanced’.
– Add dropped balls and reset balls to change the players’ movement patters.
– Depending on how many players you have, add one or more defenders in each third to force players to work harder and beat an opponent to receive the ball in space.
